WASHINGTON --?Clayton Kershaw experienced a setback in his recovery from a lower back injury, and the return of the Los Angeles Dodgers ace pitcher remains uncertain.Kershaw, on the disabled list with a mild disk herniation, has not pitched since June 26 at Pittsburgh. He suffered his second loss of the season in that outing, when he gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings. A day later, he was being examined for back issues that were being downplayed at the time, but he ended up on the disabled list by the end of the week. The Dodgers felt their top pitcher might be ready for a return on the current road trip that ends Sunday at St. Louis, but discomfort after a simulated start Saturday at Dodger Stadium has nixed those plans.Clayton, after he threw that live session, the next day Sunday didnt feel great, manager Dave Roberts said before Tuesdays series opener against the Nationals. I think that at that point and time he let us know that we had to be a little more on the cautious side.I dont know if its a step back, but were going to let the back pain subside and see where we go. So as far as his return ... uncertain.Roberts would not say if Kershaws condition is back to where it was when he went to the DL, or if it is worse. His simulated start came 20 days after his last outing in the major leagues, so if his condition is right back where it started, another three weeks could go by before he is ready to test the back again. That would move the timetable into the second week of August, and even further for a return to a major league mound. The Dodgers have managed to play winning baseball without Kershaw. They are 11-6 in the left-handers absence, but their scramble with the rotation goes beyond their three-time Cy Young Award winner. Brett Anderson (back) has been out since spring training and?Alex Wood (elbow) has been out for most of the season. Before the All-Star break,?Hyun-Jin Ryu returned from shoulder surgery for his first start since 2014, but he returned to the disabled list Tuesday with elbow tendinitis. The Dodgers will call rookie Julio Urias back to the major leagues for a start Thursday at Washington. It means their current rotation consists of Scott Kazmir, Bud Norris, Urias, Brandon McCarthy and Kenta Maeda. It could push the Dodgers toward seeking starting pitching at the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline. The club figures to be even more cautious with its star pitcher than it had been. With the back, you have to be extra sensitive, and obviously its Clayton, Roberts said. When youre dealing with a back there is some concern, certainly. Were just hoping that in the coming days there is some improvement. The Dodgers entered play Tuesday as the top team in the National League wild-card standings, one game ahead of the Miami Marlins and two ahead of the New York Mets. But both teams have gained ground in recent days.Clayton will do everything he can to get back, Roberts said. Were better when he is active, obviously. Its something we have to deal with and we have to continue to try and win baseball games. Jean-Sebastien Giguere Jersey . GOLD COAST, Australia -- Jarryd Hayne made his return from a stint in the NFL and showed flashes of his past exploits in the National Rugby League, but couldnt prevent his new team Gold Coast from losing to the New Zealand Warriors in a key match Sunday. The Warriors won 24-14, moving ahead of the Titans into seventh place in the race for a top-eight playoff spot.Hayne, who left the San Francisco 49ers and unsuccessfully tried out for Fijis Olympic rugby sevens squad, signed with the Titans on Wednesday. He came on in the 28th minute to sustained applause from a sellout crowd of 25,000; double the average attendance this season. The TV broadcasters also embraced Haynes return, offering a Hayne Cam in which one half of a split screen featured only Hayne. He made an impact on his first play as a Titan, tackling Warriors backrower Bodene Thompson when Thompson seemed destined to score. Hayne then outjumped two Warriors players to take a high kick at the other end of the field, his efforts nearly ending in a try for his new team.Early in the second half, Hayne drove Warriors star Johnson onto his back in a big one-on-one tackle, the Kiwi international fumbling the ball from the impact.Hayne finished the game with a try assist, his 20-meter grubber kick resulting in the final try of the match to winger Anthony Don.He said match fitness was the biggest issue.Just the minutes in the legs, thats something you really cant get at training bbecause of the contact, and how ferocious it is out there on the field, Hayne said.dddddddddddd Ive played in a lot of big games where mentally its got me through it. It wasnt anything I didnt expect or couldnt handle. In mid-May, Hayne announced his retirement from the 49ers in order to push for selection in the Fiji rugby sevens team for Rio.The 28-year-old Hayne surprisingly made the initial 53-man roster out of training camp as a rookie running back last year with San Francisco. Playing eight games with one start, he had 17 carries for 52 yards and six catches for 27 yards while also returning eight punts for 76 yards. His rugby sevens career turned out to be even shorter. Hayne struggled to adapt to the pace and fitness demands of sevens -- a modified version of traditional rugby in which teams play several matches in tournaments that last two to three days.Hayne began his NRL career in 2006, and scored 103 tries in 176 matches for the Parramatta Eels, the only NRL team he had played for before signing with the Titans. In the only other match Sunday, the Wests Tigers beat defending champions North Queensland 26-14.The weekend results left Melbourne in first place with 38 points, one ahead of the Cronulla Sharks. Canberra is in third place with 31 points, followed by the Canterbury Bulldogs with 30. ' ' '
