INDIANAPOLIS -- Sam Bradford continues making his pitch to be the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback. On Saturday night, he threw mostly strikes. With Carson Wentz missing a second straight game because of fractured ribs, Bradford led the Eagles on three touchdown drives and to a third straight preseason victory, 33-23.Bradford has been virtually flawless in each of his three starts. This time, he was 17 of 20 for 167 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception. He played into the third quarter and led the Eagles to scores on four of their first six possessions. Will that be enough to hold off Wentz, the No. 2 pick in this years draft?First-year coach Doug Pederson isnt saying yet.I made a decision way back in OTAs to split all the reps equally three ways all the way through training camp, he said. This is the first week Sams had 100 percent of the reps, and it showed tonight. He was high-percentage, just seeing the field and putting the ball exactly where he wants to put it.While Bradford played well, Philadelphias defense performed even better Saturday night. The Eagles stuffed the run and put Andrew Luck under so much duress in the first half, coach Chuck Pagano pulled out Luck for the final two quarters. All the Colts could muster was a short field goal in the first quarter, a blocked punt that Jordan Todman recovered in the end zone in the third and two late scores.Luck was 13 of 18 for 134 yards.KEY MISTAKERobert Turbins 81-yard TD run in the third quarter could have gotten Indy back into the game. The problem: receiver Phillip Dorsett was called for holding. You cant survive those penalties, Luck said. You cant do it.RARE MISSColts kicker Adam Vinatieri might be the best clutch kicker in NFL history, but he isnt perfect. After the Colts scored a TD, Vinatieri pushed the extra point wide left.ROOKIE WATCHEagles: Wentz didnt play and running back Wendell Smallwood, a fifth-round pick, got two carries before leaving in the third quarter to be evaluated for a head injury. Undrafted rookie David Watford made his time count, though, catching a 28-yard TD pass on his only reception of the game.Colts: Rookie offensive linemen Ryan Kelly and LeRaven Clark both had trouble in their first real NFL test. Safety T.J. Green, a second-round pick, had five tackles in his third start.POSITION BATTLESEagles: The depth chart at receiver may be tougher to sort out now. Josh Huff caught two passes for 60 yards and scored on a 9-yard run. The recently acquired Dorial Green-Beckham also caught two passes for 15 yards, including a 4-yard TD reception on which he used his bigger body to get position over a smaller defender.Colts: If there was any doubt about Joe Reitzs starting job at right tackle, its over now. Turbin may have sewn up the No. 2 job at running back after running four times for 24 yards.INJURY UPDATEEagles: Defensive end Vinny Curry left in the second quarter with an injured knee, Wendell Smallwood and tight end Chris Pantale both left in the third quarter with head injuries and defensive tackle Taylor Hurt left in the fourth quarter with a sprained knee. None of the four came back in the game.Colts: Left guard Jack Mewhort was supposed to be one of the key parts on Indys offensive line. But he left in the third quarter with a knee injury and is scheduled to have an MRI to determine if its a torn ACL. Cornerback Darius Butler also did not return after injuring his ankle in the first quarter.QUOTABLEEagles: Pederson on whether Wentz could play Thursday against the New York Jets: Hes in a position to possibly play next week. Hes still a little bit sore, so well monitor that and make sure he rests here in the next couple of days.Colts: Luck on Indys multitude of errors: Nothing quite reminds you like a game, how important the details are. Every little detail matters. We definitely have some things to clean up.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP-NFLCheap Air Max 97 Wholesale .C. at the helm of the top team in the Eastern Conference. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- No one on Florida States roster knows more about bouncing back after getting knocked down more than Matthew Thomas. For the first time in four years, the junior linebacker is living up to the potential many saw when he was recruited in 2013. Thomas leads the 13th-ranked Seminoles in tackles going into Saturdays game at South Florida.Florida State (2-1) is trying to bounce back after a 43-point loss last Saturday at Louisville. Considering that during the past three-plus seasons Thomas has dealt with shoulder injuries, the death of a parent and being academically ineligible, the blowout win by the Cardinals is just a small roadblock.Last year at this time Thomas was on the sidelines watching his teammates and wondering if he would ever play football or even remain at Florida State.I know I put myself in a lot of bad situations, bad predicaments. I dug myself in a hole, so I just had to get myself out of them he said. I may take some hits, but I get back up.Coach Jimbo Fisher said earlier this week that Thomas finally started maturing and understanding the importance of trying to revive his career.Hes really turned into a really good player for us, but more importantly becoming a very good leader, Fisher added.Thomas credits running back Dalvin Cook and defensive end DeMarcus Walker for their emotional support last year. Cook and Thomas are both Miami natives while Walker first met Thomas at a high school all-star game in 2013.Besides dealing with injuries and academics, Thomas was also struggling with the loss of his mother, Mariska Nyon, in January of 2015. As a five-star prospect at Booker T. Washington, Thomas wanted to attend Southern Cal but it was his mom who wanted him to go to Florida State.Thomas oldest brother has moved up to Tallahassee and has also provided emotional support.Thomas also said he owes Fishher a lot for standing by him and keeping his word to his mother that Fisher would support him.ddddddddddddBesides maturity, another thing players and coaches have noticed is that Thomas is having more fun. He is the first to acknowledge that the game wasnt fun due to the repeated shoulder injuries. Thomas had shoulder surgery last spring and this is the one the healthiest stretches he has had at FSU.When asked how he would assess the first three games, Thomas said he still feels as if he is rusty. He remains a physical tackler that some have compared to former FSU standout Telvin Smith, who is in his third season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.Thomas has 20 tackles, including two for loss. He is one of the quickest players on the defense but has been tentative at times by thinking too much on the field. Thomas and the Seminoles defense has struggled against option teams and face another test on Saturday against South Floridas high-scoring offense. The 3-0 Bulls have rushed for over 200 yards in eight straight games and have scored 45 points or more in their last three.I still feel like Im getting right a little bit with different situations and different atmospheres, he said. I dont want to mess up. I just want to make my teammates proud, make my couches proud. So Ive been trying stay on point.Right now, Thomas teammates are just happy that he is on the field and making plays. As time went by he saw the door closing. At the last minute, he grabbed it and opened it, Walker said. Im glad hes my teammate and hes bought in.---Online: The APs college football page: http://collegfootball.ap.org---Follow Joe on Twitter: www.twitter.com/joereedy and his work can be found at http://bigstory.ap.org/journalist/joe-reedy ' ' '
