CLEVELAND -- Chris Perez didnt bother sticking around. After blowing what would have been the Indians biggest win this season, Clevelands closer bolted before answering any questions. He ducked out. He didnt finish anything well Monday night. Perez gave up Alex Avilas three-run homer in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers rallied for a 4-2 win over the Indians to increase their lead in the AL Central to four games over Cleveland. Perez (4-2), who became a distraction earlier this season when he was arrested on misdemeanour drug charges, was brought in to protect a 2-0 lead. But the right-hander, pitching his in his third straight game, didnt retire a batter and walked dejectedly to Clevelands dugout in the ninth after giving up Avilas shot as Indians fans booed him mercilessly. Perez quickly dressed after the game and left his teammates to answer what went wrong. "We gotta win those games, thats how I see it," said centre fielder Michael Bourn, who made one of four excellent defensive plays by the Indians. "Thats a tough team over there, granted. But thats a swing game. Its not the end of the world. Its not the end of the season, but we want those games." On the same day a year ago in Detroit, Perez, who had recorded 11 straight saves since coming off the disabled list, gave up five runs in the 10th inning as the Indians lost 10-8 to the Tigers. That loss came in an 11-game losing streak and during a month in which the Indians went 5-24 and fell from contention. Manager Terry Francona believes the team can bounce back after a demoralizing defeat. "It hurt, but well show up tomorrow," Francona said. "We certainly need to be resilient and weve shown that before. If we allow it to get in the way then were not the team I thought we were." Detroit was three outs away from having its lead in the AL Central cut to two games by the second-place Indians before the comeback, which eased a difficult day in which the Tigers learned they would be without All-Star shortstop Jhonny Peralta for his involvement in the Biogenesis drug case. "It feels good after all the stuff that happened before the game," centre fielder Torii Hunter said. "We went out there and battled. We kept our focus and were professionals about it. We did what were capable of doing." After Victor Martinezs RBI single made it 2-1, Perez walked Andy Dirks before Avila drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-centre for his ninth homer, stunning a Cleveland crowd ready to celebrate the teams biggest win this season. The Indians fell to 3-10 against the Tigers, who have beaten them in nine of the last 10 matchups. Cleveland also had its home winning streak snapped at 11. "We cant depend on whoever it is out there to knock them out first and think were going to win the division," Bourn said. "Weve got to do it ourselves. Thats the only way you can do it. Its not an easy task, but it can be done, but youve got to be able to knock them out." Al Alburquerque (2-2) got one in the eighth and Joaquin Benoit worked the ninth for his 13th save. Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez struck out 11 in 7 2-3 innings, and was in line to take a tough loss before the Tigers stormed back for their 13th win in 14 games. Clevelands Corey Kluber had blanked Detroits big bats for 7 1-3 innings and set the tone in a crucial four-game series before the Indians problematic bullpen blew it. "Kluber was filthy," Hunter said. "That guy is nasty. We were scratching our heads like, What can we do to get this guy?" Detroits comeback also spoiled a great defensive effort by the Indians, who got excellent plays from Bourn, left fielder Michael Brantley and All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis. "Up until the ninth, we had played such a good game," Francona said. Kluber limited the Tigers to six singles and got some excellent defence, but the Indians couldnt close out a game that was within their grasp. The right-hander settled in after a somewhat shaky start and held the ALs top hitting team in check. Detroits Miguel Cabrera, back in the lineup after missing a few games with hip and abdominal problems, went 1 for 4 -- he was walked intentionally in the ninth -- and laboured noticeably any time he tried to run. The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Carlos Santanas RBI double, a shot off the right-field wall that just missed being a two-run homer. Jason Giambis RBI single gave the Indians a 1-0 lead in the second, when Tigers centre fielder Austin Jackson robbed Lonnie Chisenhall of a possible homer. Brantley singled with one out and stole second. With two down, Giambi, closing in on 2,000 career hits, delivered his run-scoring single to centre. Chisenhall followed with a drive to centre that Jackson snared with a leaping grab at the wall in front of the Indians bullpen. NOTES: Brantley recorded his AL-leading 10th assist in the first when he gunned down Hunter at second trying to stretch a single. ... Santana is batting .335 with runners in scoring position. ... Indians ace Justin Masterson (13-7) will face Justin Verlander (11-8) in Tuesdays game. ... Clevelands rotation has a 2.09 ERA in the last 24 games. Noah Vonleh Jersey . RIO DE JANEIRO -- When the U.S. Olympic teams charter bus pulled up outside Flamengo Club before practice, police officers closed off the street and one of the motorcycle escorts jumped off his bike and immediately started blowing his whistle.Thats been a familiar noise to the Americans in Rio.Unbeaten but no longer unchallenged following a very physical, 98-88 win over Australia, the two-time defending gold medalists are still adjusting to FIBAs rules and officials, who call a different game than the one U.S. players have grown accustomed to at home and in the NBA.Its weird, actually, U.S. forward Kevin Durant said when asked to describe the differences. I cant even explain it.With 10 first-time Olympians, Americas star-studded squad, 3-0 heading into Fridays matchup against Serbia, is learning on the fly whats a foul, whats not, what they can get away with and what they cant.Right now, starting center Demarcus Cousins doesnt have a clue. The Sacramento star might as well have bought a ticket and sat in the stands at Carioca Arena 1 for the past two games. Cousins played only eight minutes before fouling out of a 44-point win over Venezuela and he was limited to just 10 minutes against the Aussies after picking up three quick fouls in the first half and No. 4 in the third quarter. The 6-foot-10 Cousins managed to score 6 points and grabbed eight rebounds during his brief outing against the Aussies, who didnt back down against the worlds top-ranked team and may have bent the rules as far as possible with their aggressiveness. Cousins didnt hide his displeasure about a couple calls that went against him, and angrily stormed to the bench where some of his teammates tried to calm him down and encourage him.Its nothing new to U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has seen Olympic rookies struggle to adjust to the nuances of international basketball. Every player has to deal with it, but sometimes big men are an easy target.First of all, you get frustrated, Krzyzewski said. You cant get into a rhythm of playing. A couple of the times, theyre not fouls. Theyre just not fouls. But early on in the game, people like to set a tone in how the game is administered. So sometimes, they set it in the post. And so something is called a little bit closer than it would be five minutes later. And I just told him, `Youre a human being. You should be frustrated. Lets just move on to the next thing and see if we can handle that going forward, because we need you.ddddddddddddIn the amount of minutes hes been in there, hes performed very well. We need him to play more. The Americans will need him against the Serbs, one of the tournaments most physically imposing teams.Despite the loss, Australia, which has never won an Olympic medal but has its sights on one in Brazil, showed it might be effective to push the Americans. The U.S. team was slow to push back and didnt seal one of its closest wins in recent Olympics until the fourth quarter, when Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving carried the Americans in the final minutes. It wasnt as much a wake-up call to the U.S. players as a reminder that everyone in the field is aiming at them.It was a good test for us, we definitely needed that, Durant said. They challenged us. I know we were expected to win the game and expected to be perfect. But every time I have played for Team USA weve had those types of games. We went into overtime in Turkey against Brazil in 2010 and then were tied up with Lithuania with a minute to go in 2012. So you go through those games no matter what. We got the biggest spotlight and the biggest bulls-eye on our back.Everybody wants to beat us so there are going to be games like that.U.S. forward Paul George said he and his teammates may have gotten a little lax after blowouts over China and Venezuela. As he said after the Australia game, It got real.I think the biggest lesson was not being content with where were at, he said. Weve been so great defensively and put up such huge margins of victory that the second they raised the level we kind of relaxed. We just got to stay consistent throughout the tournament.Krzyzewski is teaching his internationally inexperienced team -- only Anthony and Durant are returnees from the London team -- to watch their behavior when calls arent going their way. He has implored his players to show restraint so as not to make things worse.Theyre not cheating us is what I tell the guys, he said. Dont ever get into that. Theyre not cheating us. We just have to react to it differently. Over 10 years ago, we all were saying, `Were getting cheated. Weve not bought into that for a decade and were not going to do it now. ' ' '
